Giora Solar trained in Israel and Italy as an Architect and Town Planner and is a
Conservation Architect by specialization and expertise. He has served as site architect
for numerous archaeological projects in Israel, as planner for historic towns development
projects, responsible for their conservation component, as a planner-conservator for historic
buildings, as well as planner and coordinator for preparation of management plans for cultural
heritage sites.
Between 1988 and 1995, he established and was the Director of Conservation of The
Antiquities Authority of Israel, and between1995 and 2000 the Director of the Field
Projects at The Getty Conservation Institute. In both positions he was in charge of developing
conservation projects, running departments with large number of professional and support
staff, developing and overseeing budgets and for negotiations with governments and non
government organizations. Since 2000 he is a private consultant for various conservation and
management projects in his country and in other countries in the world. He has been for several
years the Secretary General of the ICOMOS Training Committee, a member of the ICOMOS
Executive Committee since 1990 and is the Treasurer General of ICOMOS since 1999.
